Event Venue

This event will be hosted on the UCLA Intramural Field which is located on the UCLA campus in Westwood, Los Angeles. The address for this field is:
UCLA Intramural Field
336 Charles E. Young Drive North

Los Angeles, CA 90095
It is located west of the John Wooden Center and north of Pauley Pavilion, off Charles E. Young Drive in the center of campus.

Seating

In addition to the shooting area, we will have shooter seating. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide seating for our spectators so if you are not an archer, please plan to either stand for the duration of the event or provide your own seating.

Drinking Water

We will provide portable toilets on the field as well as drinking water but we will not be able to provide cups for drinking water so please be sure to have all members bring reusable bottles or cups.

Venue Restrictions

As this is a turf field, neither animals, nor consumption of food will be permitted on the field. All meals and snacks must be eaten outside the field but archers will have ample time for lunch to enjoy their meals in their preferred spot on campus.

Vendor Area

Fivics USA has graciously agreed to be a vendor for this event. They will have both a vendor booth and demo area on the field so archers can peruse their catalog of archery equipment as well as try it for themselves. Fivics will be offering their products at discounted pricing for collegiate archers, so we strongly suggest checking out their booth before the conclusion of the event.

Parking

The closest all-day visitor parking structure is Parking Structure 4 (221 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90095). The parking rates in this lot are $3/hr or $14/day and payment can be made at self-service kiosks inside the structure using cash or credit card or on your phone in the ParkMobile app. For any parking related questions, all visitor parking information can be found on the UCLA transportation website.

Food

We will provide two hours on Saturday and an hour on Sunday for lunch and will announce the time at which we will begin shooting again when we begin our lunch break. Archers will be responsible for knowing when shooting is occurring and makeup ends will not be provided for anyone who fails to be present during shooting times.

For food options, there are a handful of restaurants in Westwood which you can drive to or order from as well as a handful of restaurants in Ackerman Union, just a quick walk from the field. Information about which restaurants are present on campus can be found here. You are also welcome to bring your own food to campus.

As outlined above, consumption of food will not be permitted on the shooting field. All meals and snacks must be eaten outside the field but archers will have ample time for lunch to enjoy their meals in their preferred spot on campus.

COVID Guidelines

As we are hosting our event on UCLA’s campus, all participants and spectators must abide by any UCLA and UCLA Archery guidelines put forth regarding COVID.
For this event, all participants and spectators MUST:
Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (Two shots minimum, booster not required. Digital Cards, PDFs, or images of your vaccine card are all acceptable)
OR show a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of the event
OR administer and present a negative rapid test each morning they will be present at the event venue

Please be aware UCLA Archery’s COVID guidelines will remain stricter than the general UCLA campus policies for outdoor events. Simply following broader UCLA guidelines will not be sufficient to participate in this event so be sure you have sufficiently read and communicated to your team members the protocols as outlined above.

That said, please note our restrictions for this event have loosened since our original communication of tournament details. Archers are no longer required to wear masks, though we strongly suggest it when not actively shooting, to keep our event as safe as possible for all participants. The above paragraph contains the most up-to-date information.

We will be checking proof of vaccination or negative test during check-in. In the event someone on your team tests positive or is exposed to someone who tested positive, please notify the tournament organizers immediately.

Spectators

Spectators will be allowed at this event but should be aware of the following conditions:
1) We will not be able to provide seating for our spectators so if you are not an archer, please plan to either stand for the duration of the event or provide your own seating.
2) All spectators will be subject to the same COVID guidelines as outlined for archers in the section above. This is to protect the health and safety of our participants as well as our event staff and broader campus community.

Spectators will not be required to wear masks, though we strongly suggest it to keep our event as safe as possible for all attendees.

Tournament Format

USA Archery Collegiate Target Regionals – West Region is a three day event, consisting of one practice day* (Friday April 22), followed by two official scoring days (Saturday April 23 – Sunday April 24). Official scoring will consist of an individual qualification round, followed by individual, team and mixed team matches. The format of each of these event components will be consistent with that of USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals, as outlined in Chapter 10 of the USA Archery Club Handbook (pages 48-50). For your convenience, we have summarized the formats of these events in the next few sections. A full schedule of these events have been provided in a previous section.

*Attendance at open practice on Friday is strictly optional. On Friday, the shooting field will be open for practice, check-in, and equipment inspection. If you choose to skip Friday, you will be able to check-in and receive equipment inspection Saturday morning before shooting begins. Those who are not present Friday will be expected to arrive at the field for check-in/inspection sufficiently early before shooting begins on Saturday as to not hold up the shooting line and tournament organizers in the minutes leading up to the start of shooting.

Individual Qualification Round

This will be the first scoring event of the weekend. All divisions will have 3 official practice ends followed by 12 ends of official scoring. Ends will consist of 6 arrows/end, providing for an overall total of 72 scoring arrows. The shooting distances and target sizes vary by division and are outlined below.

Recurve: 122cm target faces placed at a distance of 70m
Barebow: 122cm target faces placed at a distance of 50m
Compound: 80cm 6-ring target faces placed at a distance of 50m
Fixed Pins/Bowhunter: 80cm 6-ring target faces placed at a distance of 50m

Illustrations of each target type are provided below.

122cm (Barebow, Recurve)
80cm 6-Ring (Compound, Fixed Pins)

Following the qualification round, every archer in each division will be ranked for placement in the elimination rounds.

Individual Elimination Rounds

Individual elimination rounds will be shot at the same size target faces and distances as listed above for each division. All archers will shoot 3 arrows per end.Recurve and Barebow archers will utilize “Set System” scoring while Compound and Fixed Pins archers will utilize cumulative scoring. These scoring systems are described below as outlined in the USA Archery Club handbook. Archers continue shooting matches until they are eliminated or declared the winner.

Set System Scoring:
“Members will compete in head-to-head match play during this event. The member with the highest score per set earns two points. If there is a tie set score, each member gets one point. The first member to six set points wins the match. If members are tied after five sets, a single arrow shoot-off will take place. If both members in the shoot-off shoot a 10, the match is still tied and another arrow will be shot. The member with the arrow closest to the center wins the match. If still tied, additional shoot-offs will take place until the match is resolved.”

Cumulative Scoring:
“Members will compete in head-to-head match play during this event. The member with the highest cumulative score after five ends wins the match. If members are tied, a single arrow shoot-off will take place. If both members in the shoot-off shoot an X, the match is still tied and another arrow will be shot. The member with the arrow closest to the center wins the match. If still tied, additional shoot-offs will take place until the match is resolved.”

Team Rounds:

Team rounds retain the same distances and target faces as described above. Teams are each composed of 3 members from the same division. Teams shoot 2 arrows/archer (6 total arrows) per end. Minor changes from above are made to the Set System and Cumulative scoring, as described below. Archers continue shooting matches until they are eliminated or declared the winner.

Set System Scoring:
“Teams will compete in head-to-head match play. The team with the highest score per set earns two points. If there is a tie set score, each team gets one point. The first team to five set points wins the match. If teams are tied after four sets, a single arrow shoot-off will take place. Each archer on the team will shoot one arrow. The team with the highest shoot-off score wins the match. If the shoot-off score is tied, the team with the arrow closest to center wins the match.”

Cumulative Scoring:
“Teams will compete in head-to-head match play during this event. The team with the highest cumulative score after four ends wins the match. If teams are tied after four ends, a shoot-off will take place. Each Archer on a team will shoot one arrow. The team with the highest shoot-off score wins the match. If the shoot-off score is tied, the team with the arrow closest to center wins the match.”

Mixed-Team Rounds:

Mixed teams are each composed of two members, one male and one female. Teams shoot 2 arrows/archer (4 total arrows) per end. Other than these modifications, mixed team rounds retain the same rules as the team rounds described above.

Scoring

In addition to regular paper scoring, we will also be utilizing Between Ends for live scoring of this event. Target assignments and live results can be found here.

Live Scoring

We are unable to provide tablets for scoring so archers should expect to use their smartphones for scoring. If using an IOS device (iPhone), scoring will be done through the browser. If you are on an Android device, scoring will be done on the Between Ends Scoring App. We strongly suggest downloading this app to your phone before arriving at this event in order to streamline the scoring process.

The team at Between Ends strongly suggests bringing a power bank or portable charger to the event to ensure your smartphone battery lasts the full day of scoring. We are working to get wifi hotspots for the field for use by archers but in the unfortunate event that we are unable to acquire the hotspots necessary, archers will be asked to use their mobile data for scoring. If no archer on the bale feels comfortable using their data for this purpose, we will provide the scorers on that bale with two paper scorecards and will upload the scores manually at the conclusion of scoring for that event.

Coach Credentials

A Coach Credential is not required for coaches at our event, though we will be following the Athlete Safety Procedures for Event Organizers which can be found here. Coaches are also expected to abide by the USA Archery dress code as outlined below. The following is an excerpt from these rules targeted at judges specifically.

“Team coaches and managers may wear a different style uniform than the team but should wear the same colors and should be easily identified as the official of their team.”

Dress Code

As a USA Archery Sanctioned event, all participants are required to abide by all dress code guidelines for outdoor collegiate events at all times (including Official Practice), as outlined by USA Archery. These dress code guidelines can be found here. To avoid any confusion or ambiguity, as this is a Regional Outdoor Collegiate Championship, we will be abiding by all rules set forth by USA Archery for these types of events, which includes rule #9 in the document linked above.

Awards

Medals will be awarded to the top three (3) archers in each division for qualifications as well as individual eliminations. Additional medals will be awarded to the top three (3) teams in each division for team and mixed team matches (one medal per team member). Trophies will be awarded to the top three schools as determined based on USA Archery’s “National Team Championship” scoring guidelines. Event medals and trophies are provided by UCLA Archery.

In addition to event awards, results from the Collegiate Target Regionals will be used to determine All-Region Team honors. The selection criteria for All-Region Team is outlined by USA Archery and awards for these All-Region Teams will be provided by USA Archery.
